I'm very excited to announce that we've launched a new low-cost version of our award-winning XML Editor today: the XMLSpy Standard Edition is an entry-level XML Editor that packs some of the most frequently-used features of the higher-level editions into a product that is ideally suited for basic XML editing tasks, such as XML configuration file changes, twiddling with RSS feeds, viewing XML output from applications, writing small XSLT stylesheets, and for learning XML.
XMLSpy Standard Edition comes complete with XML Editor, XSLT Editor, XQuery Editor, and CSS Editor, as well as the built-in AltovaXML processor that allows you to run all XSLT transformations and XQuery code right within XMLSpy. In addition you have the ability to graphically view XML Schemas and to browse any XML files in grid view.
This new edition of XMLSpy is specifically based on customer feedback asking us for a more entry-level version of Altova XMLSpy. Over the years we've added so many features to XMLSpy Professional Edition and Enterprise Edition that some users, who only needed basic XML editing features, felt that we left them behind. We sincerely apologize for that and believe that the new XMLSpy Standard Edition will be filling this need very nicely. See for yourself by taking a look at this product comparison.
As with all other Altova tools, you can download XMLSpy Standard Edition for free and evaluate it for 30-days. Once you decide to purchase it, you can do so from many resellers as well as at the Altova Online Shop at a price of US$ 149 or € 99.

Great idea! I've been holding off getting more XMLSpy licenses, as it seemed rather costly for what would be used only as a simple (if good) XML editor. I was, however, disappointed to see grid-mode XML editing (read-write) not included -- since I would have thought this was a base feature for an XML editor. So I guess I'll be sticking with our current system for now.
I just bought a copy of 2009 Standard ($129) after evaluating 2009 Enterprise. (Is it even possible to evaluate the standard edition?) Anyway, I'm highly disappointed about the read-only grid and read-only schema. The schema editor is pretty cool and unique, so I can understand it being Pro-level ($499), but it's pretty lame to have the grid read-only. I work at a small company, so I couldn't justify $370 for grid view anyway, but I probably would have stuck with free XML Notepad had I known. Fool me once, Altova...
Hi Trevor,
very sorry to hear that you were confused about what features are included in the Standard Edition. However, I need to clarify two things:
(a) we do, of course, allow customers to evaluate every edition of our software for 30 days - XMLSpy Standard Edition is available for downloading here;
(b) we also have a comprehensive list that compares all the features between editions, and it clearly says that the grid-view is read-only in the Standard Edition.
We are not hiding any of this - it's out in the open on our web-site, so I can't agree with the "fool me once..."
